The Battle of Normandy (or Operation Overlord/D-Day) had been planned for a few years prior to the actual date. From 1941 to 1944, the Americans planned this out so that they could be more prepared. However, Carl never did any of this planning due to how late he was drafted. As it is not reported what battle Carl actually died in, it is assumed that Carl’s last battle was during the German Counterattack and the Falaise pocket.
Carl died in Le Coudray, France, on August 12, 1944. He was buried the day after his death and was attached to a temporary marker. Carl was then moved to Saint James in Brittany, France. He there were customary military funeral services conducted at his gravesite at the Marigny Germany War Cemetery, Plot M, row 1, grave 16. However, he was later moved to Brittany American Cemetery, Plot I, Row 7, Grave 13.
His wife got the following items from disposition: social security card, wallet, their photos, two knives, a Bible, miscellaneous papers, 160 francs, and $3.44 (or $50.89 in today’s money). His wife was also sent a flag in memorial of Carl on January 7, 1949.
